Prometheus

Like me, you might have read or heard recently that Ridley Scott has stated that Prometheus is not a prequel to Alien. When I watched the movie I couldn't understand how he could claim such a thing as it has very obvious links to the 1979 film he also directed.

I now understand that what he said was that this was not a direct prequel. What he meant by this is; He sees this film as being set one or two movies before Alien. But at some stage, if Prometheus is successful, those other two movies could get made.

Prometheus is the name of a ship carrying a team of scientists to a distant planet. The team have found their way there through a series of 'star maps' that have been found in many different and ancient civilizations. Believing this to be an invitation from the inhabitants of this planet, the team of scientists go to seek them out. Once there they discover a structure containing some dead humanoids they call engineers. And a room full of cylinders which start to ooze black liquid. One crew member unknowingly ingests the liquid and starts to have some rather nasty reactions to it. Meanwhile another crew member is attacked and killed by a snake like creature within the confines of the structure. The team must get back to Prometheus as the fate of the earth rests in their hands.

One of my friends recently saw the movie and wrote on facebook "Visually brilliant, links to Alien awesome. Script and soundtrack awful!" The funny thing about this comment was that I kinda felt the opposite (visually brilliant aside - as I agree with that part). I felt that it was the links to Alien that let the film down. And I actually struggle to see how Ridley Scott could join this up with Alien even if he had two more films in which to try.

I felt that if Prometheus was a stand alone film, exploring a similar genre but totally separate to Alien and giving us a totally different beast, it would have worked. But it was the mis-matched guidelines that tried to marry up with Alien where it seemed to fall apart.

The film left me with a lot more questions than answers and I don't think I'm alone in feeling that way. Maybe that's what Ridley was going for so that the studio would let him make Prometheus 2 and 3? All I know is that I felt super let down by the ending and felt that the final 'alien' made a mockery of the creature I've been scared of for the last 10+ years.

If you're a fan of the original Alien movie you might enjoy Prometheus as it has the same approach to the horror/sci-fi genre that Alien had. It's a slow burner but one which has been stylishly made and featuring some great performances. Just don't expect a film that will seamlessly answer all of those questions you've had for the last 33 years. 7 out of 10.

Personal Blogs Are Moving

I did say that this blog would be a combination of my two previous blogs - Film Reviews and Personal Blogs - but it has been a little more movie heavy. As such it feels kinda weird to interject personal blogs into this space, unless, as with the Avengers Premiere, the personal blogs are also movie related.

As such, I have made the decision to continue updating my old Personal Blog with non-movie related posts and just posting a link here if you want to read them. I hope everyone is okay with that decision and will continue to read the personal posts there.

What I also did, which none of you will know unless you stumbled upon it by accident, is create two new blogs. One was specifically designed for planning and charting my recent trip to New York with my best friend D, <http://dknyexperience.blogspot.co.uk/> and one was created to mirror this blog but on a different hosting site <http://ladyksmoviedialogue.wordpress.com/> as I was reliably informed I'd get more traffic from Wordpress than I do on Blogger.

If you want to have a read of either of those blogs then by all means knock yourselves out. I have recently uploaded Our First Day in New York on the DKNY Experience blog and will be uploading more days shortly.

In the mean time I will crack on with the Prometheus review for this site.

Thanks for reading as always, you're all awesome.

American Pie: Reunion

Mini Blog

This one time, at band camp, I met Alyson Hannigan. Well it wasn't exactly at band camp, but I did meet her. And it suddenly occurs to me that whilst I have talked about lots of other famous people I've seen in real life, Jake, the cast of Harry Potter and Avengers Assemble, I've never written about the time I met Alyson. About time I rectified that don't you think?

It was the summer of 2000, my best friend Miranda and I had learned that Alyson was scheduled to appear at the Virgin Megastore in London to sign the newly released Buffy Season 3 VHS box sets. Yes, VHS. It was THAT long ago. As Willow was undoubtedly our favourite female in the show we HAD to meet her. Just had to. And as Oz had just given Willow a pez witch on the show, we HAD to do that too. Only problem was we couldn't find a pez witch anywhere. So we got her a Marge Simpson pez instead. It was the lamest thing ever now I think back on it but we were young and she was our idol so you have to cut us some slack.

We waited in line for hours, chatting to the geeks (we weren't geeks you understand - we were cool!) behind us in the queue and eventually making our way inside. We glimpsed her from the glass stairs and Miranda (being Miranda) started becoming hysterical. Screaming and jumping up and down. I held our place in the queue and gave her my camera to take some pictures of Aly. She ran back to me stating that she'd seen her stand up to greet someone and she had a very small butt! It's strange the things you remember! When I look at the photo Miranda took now I hear her say 'look at her tiny butt'.

We got closer and closer to the front of the queue and then it was our turn. She signed our boxes, took the Marge Simpson pez "I love The Simpsons" she said, totally missing the point that we'd failed to explain, and had her picture taken with us. I asked her if she would also sign my Buffy yearbook to which she said "I'm not supposed to", but after a quick look around to see if anyone was watching she did it anyway. I still have both the book and the VHS box set. And if I met her again I bet I'd be just as tongue tied.

So that's how I met one of the sweetest, prettiest and most adorable cast members of the American Pie films. Since Buffy finished I have continued to follow Alyson's career in How I Met Your Mother and although I've avoided the subsequent unrelated American Pie films, I knew I would go and see Reunion, if just for Aly and her tiny butt.

I'm glad to say that the film did everything it said on the poster, and then some. It really felt like the producers had gone back to the roots of the original film and restored the characters to their best. I loved that they got EVERYONE to come back. I don't want to give anything away if you've not seen it, but even some characters you don't think will be there are there in the end.

It made me laugh, cringe and even made me cry at one point. It was so much better than I'd hoped or expected. So regardless of what you thought of the sequels, if you're a fan of the first slice of Pie, go and see the last. You won't regret it. 7.5 out of 10.

Miss Me?

My loyal readers might have noticed that I've not written for a while? "Has she just stopped going to the movies?" I've heard you cry (in my head anyway).

The answer is no, I've not stopped going to the movies, and in fact I have a potential four new movies that I could and possibly will review. The reason for my absence is that I've been away. On an actual holiday! To New York no less. So I will be slowly but surely catching up with reviews in the coming week.

The films I have not yet reviewed are:
American Reunion
Prometheus
Jaws
Snow White And The Huntsman

If there are any of those you particularly want a review for can you let me know by leaving a comment as I wasn't sure I'd do all 4? I saw American Reunion before I went away so it's not that fresh in my mind but I'm sure I could do a mini review if you really wanted me to?

I might also do the odd blog about New York if y'all want me to? But if so then you'll have to leave me a comment to let me know?

It's good to be back with you and I promise to post again soon.

Dark Shadows

Mini Blog

Dark Shadows is the first review I have done of a Johnny Depp/Tim Burton collaboration. As such, it's the first opportunity I have had to talk about my appreciation of both actor and director and the movies they have made together which I have grown up with.

Anyone who has read my randomness blog <http://ladyk23.tumblr.com/post/3815735765/im-new-here-be-kind> will know that Edward Scissorhands is a film which had a MASSIVE impact on me, both as a cinemagoer and as a person. I have no doubt that the gothic nature of that film made me a much darker person. I saw Edward Scissorhands on my 10th birthday (thanks for taking me Bro!) and soon after developed my love of all things black, cobweb-y and skulls. Lots of skulls. This is something that still forms part of who I am today. Sure I never turned into a full fledged goth (something I'm sure my mother and father are most grateful for) but I'm sitting here wearing black nail varnish and a scarf with skulls and crossbones all over it. And no-one who knows me would find this out of character. Because it's been part of who I am for so long.

From Edward onto Ed Wood, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride, Johnny and Tim could do no wrong in my eyes. Then came Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. Despite my hatred of Musicals, Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory is one of my favourite childhood films. Gene Wilder is perfect as the wild eyed Willy Wonka, the scenes of chocolate rivers and edible everything stayed with me long into adulthood and I would now probably consider it a bit of a guilty pleasure. The re-make however, does not conjure up the same fond memories. It was all wrong. Johnny was wrong. The umpa-lumpa's were wrong. It just should never have been made. And especially not by Johnny and Tim.

They redeemed themselves somewhat with Sweeny Todd but again as I loathe musicals this was not their best effort. Then came Alice in Wonderland. Again just all wrong. Johnny was wrong. Helena was wrong. Just no no no no no!!!!!

So I'd all but given up on the dream team when Dark Shadows was announced. It could work. Johnny and Tim again exploring the dark, gothic side of film and Johnny playing a vampire. Certainly fulfilling a long time fantasy of mine. But it didn't work. Here's why:

1) Johnny is too old to play a vampire. He's not sexy (I'm not saying in general - just not in this role) and his age makes his relationship with the young girl seem creepy.

2) The film is not funny. It tries to be but the jokes are painfully unfunny and were met by a wall of silence in the viewing I saw.

3) It's too long. The last act of the film goes on for half the length of the movie. And just when you think it's finally over, some other lame plot twist is thrown into the mix.

I really thought that this film would put Johnny and Tim firmly back to their collaborative best but it just re-affirmed something I've been suspecting for a while. That they should stop working together and instead work with new people who may liven both of them up and help them create a fresh approach. This undead tale should be burried. 4 out of 10.
